Some publications read a bit about talking a bit about exploitation

How’d my thing about how publications shouldn’t exploit freelancers do inside publications? One metric of reach—a hint at it, really—is to check out Google Analytics and see what “Service Providers” were used to access it over the course of the few days its traffic peaked. For publications that have their own networks (the biggest ones usually do), that gives a relatively reliable look at how many individual computers in that newsroom loaded it to their screen.

Some of the more notable Service Providers:

Toronto Star (which would include the Grid, I believe): 18

Postmedia Network Inc. (so The Post, among others): 11

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: 4

Now Magazine: 4

Sun Media Corporation: 3

The Globe and Mail: 3

(There were no results for St. Joseph Media, which publishes Toronto Life and Torontoist. I don’t know if they serve as their own service provider or not.)
