This week: mapping highrise construction city-wide, outing Bixi’s expansion plan, missing Banksy, and provoking Sue-Ann Levy

I’m working at The Grid at the moment—doing what is, for now at least, a brief stint—and have been really liking it a lot. (My gig, on top of doing lots of reporting, is to work with both the print and web sides of the magazine and make them fit together a little bit better, hopefully turning people who mostly read us in print into web readers, too, and people who mostly read us on the web into print readers, too. I don’t know what my title would be, but I sure hope it wouldn’t be “Cross-Platform Strategist.”)
So, I’ve been busy. Here’s some of what I was up to this past week:
- Ed Keenan wrote a killer feature about that cluster of condo buildings at the foot of Spadina Street—CityPlace—and whether it’s on its way to becoming Toronto’s next ghetto. As an online-only complement to his cover story, I created a map of all of Toronto’s 239 active highrise construction projects. (A section of that map is pictured above.) 239!
- Last week, Toronto’s bike-sharing program, Bixi, announced that they were relocating two of their bike stations east of their existing service boundaries, to Parliament Street. I was lucky enough to be right when I bet that that wasn’t all: the service is set to expand west to Bathurst Street, south and east into the Distillery District, and along Sherbourne Street. Here’s the scoop.
- I discovered that there’s not much new to report for now with that Banksy security guard on the back of 90 Harbour Street: it’s been removed, and is now in storage—along with the wall it was painted on.
- Also, I didn’t mean to provoke the Toronto Sun’s know-nothing City Hall columnist Sue-Ann Levy, but this happened, then this did, then this did, then I guess I was sort of asking for it, then she told me I should get a job, and then it was very nice to be able to say this in response.
Lots more next week.
